Barn at Layer Marney Tower

The barn at Layer Marney Tower may well predate the building of the Tower in the sixteenth century. It contains some re-used timbers from the thirteenth century and may have made use of timbers from the old manor house when it was demolished to make way for the grand Tudor Gateway.

The barn is a timber-framed, aisled barn. It now houses some of the items for the children’s farm. The passage way is near one end, but that may be because of various re-buildings. The barn has a clay tile roof and is clad in traditional Essex clapboard.
