Torre Abbey Barn

The Barn at Torre Abbey was a monastic barn used to store and process grain for the abbey. It may have been built as early as the thirteenth century although the roof appears to be late fifteenth century. It is also known as the Spanish Barn having been used to house prisoners from the Spanish Armada.

It is built of sandstone and limestone rubble, with central opposed porches. It is divided into 16 bays by 17 raised-cruck trusses, the end ones being close to the gables. There is considerable racking of the trusses owing to the absence of wind-braces.
