If you are visiting North-East Lancashire, you should visit the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford just north of Burnley. The centre includes a farmhouse, giving a chronological history of the development of a Northern farm, two barns, a 15th century cruck barn and an 18th century barn and a beautiful kitchen garden which supplies fresh produce for the excellent cafe. Entry to the cafe is free, and there is a charge for entry to the rest of the site.
The cruck barn was moved and reconstructed on its present site by the Heritage Trust for the North West which runs the centre. The 18th century Park Hill Barn is now used as an art gallery and conference centre, but records in its fabric the many changes that took place in farming during the 18th and 19th centuries. |
