Swalcliffe Barn was built at the beginning of the 14th century. It was one of many barns belonging to New College Oxford. It is divided into ten bays with nine raised crucks supporting a limestone slate roof on massive ironstone walls. It has to large wagon porches facing into what used to be the grange farmyard and two smaller doors opposite. It was restored by English Heritage in 1990/91 and now houses the Oxfordshire Museums Services collection of farm wagons. It is open to the public on Sundays and Bank Holidays. There is an excellent account of the archaeology and restoration of the building, reprinted from Oxoniensia LX for sale in the barn. View tithe barns in a larger map |
