Penistone Market Hall

The market hall at Penistone in Yorkshire claims to be the largest oak framed building in England. It was built by Carpenter Oak of Totnes and was completed in 2011. Although it displays some features of a traditional aisled barn many of the details are interestingly different. It has sling braces springing from the aisle posts passing through the tie-beams and raked struts to support a king post. Arched braces also support the tie-beams. The aisle and wall posts are supported on padstones.

Stalls can be erected in the aisles and the traders vehicles can access it via the central nave. The main drawback seems to be the lack of walls which in view of Yorkshire’s climate seems a little strange.
