This website is about the great barns of Britain. Most of them were built in the Middle Ages, but there was another burst of barn building after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, another in the 18th century during the Agrarian Revolution and a fourth in the 19th Century. Many have fallen prey to time and changing farming practices, but some still survive.

They are wonderful structures, well worth a visit. For that reason I have added a gazatteer so that if you are planning to visit one of the barns you can easily find other places nearby which might be of interest to you. Most of the great barns are associated with monastic granges, the local manor house or the parish church. When you are looking for them, you can usually start with the parish church or street names such as Grange, Court or Manor. Of course not all of the barns are open to the public, so please respect people's privacy.

If you have any comments about this site, please email me. I am particularly interested if you live in a barn conversion and would like to share photographs with me. If you are interested in buying a barn, there is a link to Barnsetc on the left.

I have just found the English Heritage - Images of England database, which has over 5,500 barns on it, so there is still lots to do. I update theVisited Barns page as I get to new barns so please book mark it and visit again soon.
